Botanical form
Yellow girl Annual herb, about 50 centimeters high. Stem slightly prostrate or inclined, much branched, finely pilose or nearly smooth. Simple leaves alternate; leaf blade ovate-orbicular or oblong, 2-8 cm long, 1-5 cm wide, apex
mucronate, leaf bases unequal, entire or undulate, or with irregular notches, green and nearly glabrous above, hairier below; petiole 1-4 cm long, hairy. Flowers solitary in leaf axils; petiole ca. 5 mm; calyx campanulate, green, membranous, 5-lobed, hirsute, calyx enlarged as a lantern when fruiting, ca. 1.5 cm in diameter, enclosing the outside of the fruit, with a prominent 5-ribbed angle; corolla campanulate, 5-lobed, yellowish-green, ca. 8 mm, with patches near the base of the corolla tube; stamens 5, inserted on the base of the corolla tube, anthers oblong; pistil 1, ovary orbicular, 2-loculed. Ovules numerous, style linear, stigma capitate, obscurely 2-lobed. Berry orbicular, yellow, ca. 1.5 cm in diam. Fl. Fruiting July. It grows in fields, soil cans, and slopes. Distributed throughout the north and south of China.
Functions and Indications
Soaks away dampness and kills worms. Treatment of jaundice, dysuria, chronic cough and asthma, chancre, scrofula, blistering sores, wet sores.
