Consequences of breaking the law:
A person who is found guilty of a crime is subject to criminal penalties; just as a person who is proven to have committed a civil tort is required to pay damages to the victim.
For example, if a person A injures a person B due to careless driving, then a person B can file a lawsuit against a person A for damages. However, if so-and-so A had used violence to physically assault so-and-so B, then so-and-so A would have been cited and convicted of the crime and would have been criminally punished.
This distinction between the consequences of a criminal offense and a civil infraction is blurred by the fact that in some cases a criminal court can refuse to punish an offender, such as when a judge might prefer to release a defendant on more lenient grounds.
Secondly, in some cases, a civil court may again punish the defendant by ordering him to pay exemplary damages to the plaintiff. This happens all the time in defamation.
