Weihai belongs to a third-tier city. It is one of the first batch of national modern agricultural demonstration zones, an important production base of green food raw materials for apples and peanuts in China, and a major export market for agricultural products in Shandong Province, with cultivated land area of194,600 hectares. The annual export volume of agricultural products in the city has remained at 15 for many years.

Weihai is located in East China and the eastern end of Shandong Peninsula. It is bordered by the Yellow Sea in the north, east and south, the Liaodong Peninsula in the north, the Korean Peninsula across the sea in the east and Yantai in Shandong in the west. The maximum transverse distance from east to west135km, the maximum longitudinal distance from north to south1km, and the coastline is 985.9km long. Weihai takes the meaning of a sublime sea border and is nicknamed ahava.

Weihai is the closest city in Chinese mainland to Seoul, the birthplace of the first navy in modern China, and the site of the Sino-Japanese War. After the Sino-Japanese War, Weihai was occupied by foreign powers and returned to the motherland.

1984 Weihai became the first batch of coastal open cities in China. 1990 was rated as the first national health city in China. 1996 was named as a national garden city by the Ministry of Construction. On May 7, 2009, it was selected as a national forest city. In 20 15, it became the first demonstration city of China-Korea free trade zone. In 20 16, it was listed as the first batch of national comprehensive pilot areas for new urbanization in the State Council.
