Yao Zesheng in the late Qing Dynasty was the owner of the Tongde Silver Company.

In 1930, Yao Zesheng and Yong Shengyuan, the manager of Xidan Shopping Center, invested 5,000 yuan to support the Xinfenglou Restaurant, which was one of the "Eight Buildings" in the capital of Beijing, and opened the Fengzeyuan Restaurant. Later, on the basis of Fengzeyuan Restaurant, it was expanded into the present Fengzeyuan, an international three-star level hotel.

Prior to the opening, Yao Zesheng convened shareholders in Zhongnanhai, an ancient garden building "Fung Chak Yuen" in the **** discussion of opening matters. Unanimously agreed to borrow the beautiful name of "Fung Chak Yuen" as the name of the restaurant, and asked Li Qi wrote a plaque. In 1952, the Chinese state funded a public-private partnership for Fengzeyuan. It was the first restaurant in Beijing to implement joint venture. Meanwhile, with its famous Lu cuisine and excellent service, Fengzeyuan Dining Hall became not only a place for celebrities to gather for meals, but also an important place for Chinese party and state leaders to hold banquets and events.

Comrades Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and Deng Xiaoping have all hosted banquets at Fengzeyuan. When Chairman Mao Zedong received guests at his home, he often asked the chef of Fengze Yuan to serve him. "When the Cultural Revolution began, the rebels were the first to attack Fengzeyuan.
