Hongze Lake
Hongze Lake, the fourth largest freshwater lake in China. Located in the western part of Jiangsu Province, downstream of the Huaihe River, west of the central part of the North Jiangsu Plain, Huai'an, Suqian City, geographically located in the north latitude 33_06′-33_40′, longitude 118_10′-118_52′ between the combination of the lower and middle reaches of the Huaihe River.
Originally a group of small shallow lakes, anciently known as Fuling Lake, after the two Han Dynasty, it was called Broken Kettle Pond, and in Sui Dynasty, it was called Hongze Pu, and in Tang Dynasty, it was named Hongze Lake.
After 1128, the Yellow River migrated southward through Surabaya River below Huaiyin to capture the downstream channel of Huaihe River to enter the sea, and Huaihe River lost its channel to the sea, and water was trapped east of Xuyi, and the original small lake expanded into Hongze Lake.
