When is Mother's Day?

Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year. Mothers Day is a holiday to thank mothers. Mothers Day first appeared in ancient Greece.

Modern Mother's Day was initiated by Anna Jarvis (1864-1948) in the U.S. and is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year.

In December 2006, the Chinese National Association's Emblem and Culture Committee and other organizations designated the second day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar, the day on which Mencius' mother gave birth to her son, as Chinese Mother's Day.

Mothers Day, as a holiday to thank mothers, first appeared in ancient Greece on January 8 every year, while in China, the United States, Canada and some other countries, it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year, and the date is not the same in some other countries. Mothers usually receive gifts on this day.

Mother's Day originated in the United States, where Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, USA, was devastated by the death of her mother on May 9, 1906, the anniversary of her death the following year. On the anniversary of her mother's death the following year, Miss Anna organized a memorial service for her mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their mothers in a similar way. Since then, she has lobbied and appealed to all sectors of the community for a Mother's Day.

Her appeal was met with an enthusiastic response, and on May 10, 1913, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed a resolution, signed by President Woodrow Wilson, deciding that Mother's Day would be celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year. From then on, there was Mother's Day, which also became the world's first Mother's Day. This initiative has caused countries around the world to follow suit, and by the time Anna died in 1948, 43 countries had established a Mother's Day.
