The predecessor of Xinjiang University was the Xinjiang Russian Legal and Political School founded in 1924. In January 1935, it was restructured into Xinjiang College. On October 1, 1960, Xinjiang University was officially established. In 1978, the school was designated by the State Council as the only national key university in Xinjiang.
In 1997, it was included in the first batch of national "211 Project" key universities. In 2000, it was identified as a key university for the development of the western region of the country; in the same year, Xinjiang University merged with the original Xinjiang Institute of Technology to form a new Xinjiang University. In 2004, the school became a university designated by the People's Government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Ministry of Education as a "district and ministry-first" university.
