Sawfat Carp is a collective name for about 30 species of freshwater fish that live in the Amazon River, most of which are actually vegetarian, feeding on fruits that fall from trees into the river. Only a few are carnivorous, and the fiercest of these is the tarsier sawfin carp, which has a beautiful red stripe on its belly and is commonly known as the red-bellied bilbao, or "red-bellied sawfin carp".
Habitat
Distributed from northern Argentina to Colombia, there are a large number of species of water tiger fish in the Amazon, with 20 species having been found. The most notorious is the red-bellied water tigerfish (Serrasalmus nattereri, the great sawfat carp), which has the most powerful palate and sharpest teeth of all the species of the genus Sawfat Carp.
Particularly during the low-water season, this species hunts in packs, with the number of individuals in each pack being as high as a hundred or more. If a large animal is attacked, several schools of red-bellied water gobies will gather and feed frantically; but this is rare.
Red-bellied gobies like to attack prey that is the same size or smaller than themselves. In general, a group of red-bellied water gobies often spread out and look for prey. The fish responsible for scouting finds the prey, attacks it and signals to its companions. The signals they send out are probably auditory signals, as the red-bellied wahoo's sense of hearing is extremely sensitive.
Each fish in a school of red-bellied water gobies rushes toward its prey, takes a bite, and swims away to make way for others. But most water gobies never attack large animals, and incidents of water gobies attacking people are extremely rare.
