notes for appreciation and maintenance of the elm bonsai

huamujun

elm is one of the famous "seven sages" of bonsai, and the most suitable species for making bonsai in elm is the elm, which is widely distributed. From the Yellow River basin to the Yangtze River basin, most provinces can see the traces of the elm, and the elm bonsai is one of the varieties with the largest number of bonsai and piles in China, which is very popular among potted friends.

UlmusparvifoliaJacq, also known as Ulmus microphylla and Ulmus microphylla, is a deciduous tree of Ulmus. Up to 25 meters, DBH up to 1 meter; The crown of the tree is wide and round, the base of the trunk is sometimes tabular, and the bark is gray or grayish brown, which splits into irregular scales and peels off, exposing reddish-brown endothelium, which is nearly smooth and slightly uneven; Branches of current year are densely pubescent, dark brown; Winter buds are ovoid, reddish brown and hairless; The leaves are thick, lanceolate-ovoid or narrow-oval, thin-ovoid or inverted-ovoid, simple leaves alternate, small and hard, with fine teeth at the edge, dark green and shiny; Between summer and autumn, small yellow-green flowers cluster in the axils of leaves, and the flowering and fruiting period is from August to October.

Ulmus pumila has a simple and beautiful tree shape, natural posture, mottled bark and fine branches and leaves, and is extremely rich in wild resources. Wild stumps with strange shapes can often be seen going down the mountain, with high survival rate, strong adaptability, rapid sprouting power, strong plasticity, and resistance to flattening and pruning. The branches and leaves can be tied into slices or trimmed into natural crowns, which is suitable for making various bonsai shapes, such as straight dry type, inclined dry type, horizontal dry type and so on. In particular, shaping the stone-attached elm bonsai can intercept a corner of nature, allowing some exaggeration. In order to render the charm of a certain part, trees can be above rocks, with trees as the main and stones as the secondary, without being limited by "Zhang Shan Chi Shu". The Lingnan School, Su School and Yang School in China's bonsai schools often use Ulmus pumila as the main tree species.

We introduced the production of Langyu bonsai in front of us, so I won't go into details here. Today, we will share some maintenance precautions about Langyu bonsai.

1. Deciduous or not

Ulmus pumila is a deciduous tree species. Under natural conditions, physiological deciduous leaves will appear in winter. Therefore, bonsai artists will prune the elm tree during the defoliation period in winter, so as to better reflect the charm of the elm tree and better shape and reshape it. However, if the elm bonsai is maintained indoors, it will not shed leaves in winter when the temperature is higher than 15℃, and it will grow if the temperature is above 18℃ to 2℃.

Second, the problem of pulp escaping

The pulp escaping of Ulmus pumila is a problem that many basin friends are concerned about. Because water pulp is seen on the root section of Ulmus pumila downhill, there are more Ulmus pumila piles that rot roots and shrink branches until they die. Generally, mud should be smeared on the roots after pile picking to prevent dehydration and pulp bleeding. However, many pot friends bought it from other places, and treated it badly after receiving it. Some of them will take measures such as soaking rooting agent, so the roots will still run pulp when soaked in water.

Therefore, it is suggested that pot friends should never soak the elm stump with rooting agent or water after receiving it. Instead, the roots can be washed and properly treated, and then the cutting section should be leveled and smooth with a sharp knife, and the healing agent should be applied. If there is no healing agent, it should be applied with plant ash or erythromycin ointment, and then it should be properly aired and put on the pot after the root healing agent is dried. Disinfecting powder and rooting agent powder can be mixed into soil matrix, and the concentration should be low. The roots treated in this way will not run out of pulp, so pay attention to the fact that the water should be dry. Generally, the roots are not watered after watering, and the water will be replenished after germination.

3. Precautions for embryo cultivation

First, shallow planting and high enclosure, because the pile type of Ulmus pumila downhill is simple, most of the roots are crooked and changeable, and it is easy to appear scar holes, which is very beautiful, and the shape is the main focus of viewing. Therefore, shallow planting and high enclosure are adopted, and after the downhill pile survives, the upper virtual soil is gradually removed, so that the roots are suspended and claws are exposed, and the expression is vigorous, very beautiful and not.

secondly, bagging and moisturizing. The secret of high survival rate of Ulmus pumila piles is that the roots and stems are wet. It means that the roots should be kept in a dry state, which is conducive to rooting, while the stems should be kept in a wet environment, which is conducive to germination. Therefore, bagging or wrapping plastic wrap is very effective.

Third, slow adaptation after germination. After the germination of Ulmus pumila, if we are eager to remove the moisturizing measures, there will be false living phenomenon, resulting in the death of the downhill pile. Therefore, to adapt slowly, plastic bags or plastic wrap can be punched and ventilated to gradually adapt to the surrounding environment. When the leaves are displayed for the second time, it shows that the roots have taken root, and the moisturizing measures can be completely removed, which can greatly improve the survival rate.

4. Slow pruning

Pruning is not recommended for the downhill pile of Ulmus pumila in the first year, which is beneficial to aerobic respiration and photosynthesis of the plant and makes the roots flourish. Prune it properly in the second year, and don't rush to shape it.

5. Pay attention to excessive cutting and storing branches

Ulmus pumila grows rapidly. Cutting and storing branches by modelling technique of Lingnan School is very suitable, but it must not be impatient. It must be trimmed moderately according to the overall shape, and the excess must be natural. When the superior branches are not basically formed, don't rush to trim the graded branches to avoid the superior branches being thin and excessively abrupt. Even if there are antlers, chicken feet and other branches, it is extremely uncoordinated.

The production and maintenance of Langyu bonsai have a lot to do with annual achievements. Even natural and beautiful piles need years of pruning and rolling to form a pot of fine products, which requires patience, perseverance and normality. The author sees that there are many so-called experts who are eager for success and have a lot of grades. However, they are lacking in the first and second grades, and they are frivolous as a whole, and their annual achievements are extremely poor. However, Daren has also priced his so-called works at more than 1, yuan, which is just a gimmick to brag and deceive others. I hope that the basin friends will not follow suit.

The above are some experiences and opinions about the matters needing attention in the maintenance of the elm bonsai. If there are any shortcomings, please criticize and correct them. Thank you!
