The Spree River originates from the Lusatia Mountains in the south-east of the country and divides into two branches when it flows north through Splembelg. After flowing through Kottbus, it divides into a network of channels and forms a swampy forested area up to Lubben. After passing through the Fulstenwalde and the Kopenick, the streams twist and turn through Berlin and join the Havel, a tributary of the Elbe, at Spandau. It is 403 kilometers (250 miles) long, with a watershed area of 10,100 square kilometers (3,900 square miles). The swampy forested area is mostly cleared for vegetable plots and is a popular outing for Berliners. The Spree is connected to a number of neighboring rivers by canals, the most important of which passes through the Oder-Spree Canal southeast of Berlin.
