The difference between the Yangtze sturgeon and the Chinese sturgeon mainly lies in the living environment, food, appearance characteristics.
1, living environment
Yangtze Sturgeon (Dabbling Sturgeon) is a freshwater sedentary fish, mainly in the lower Jinsha River and the Yangtze River in the upper reaches of the waters, but also in the Yangtze River tributaries are also distributed.
The sturgeon is migratory or semi-migratory, migrating to the Yangtze River in summer and fall to spawn, and then returning to the shallow waters outside the mouth of the Yangtze River when the juveniles grow to about 15cm.
2, food
The Yangtze sturgeon is an omnivorous fish, mainly to dragonflies, mayflies, mayflies, mosquitoes, oligochaetes and other insect larvae, and benthic invertebrates for food, but also ingested higher plant debris and algae.
The sturgeon is a carnivorous fish, mainly feeding on slow-moving benthic animals, and in the ocean it mainly feeds on fish and crustaceans.
3, appearance characteristics
The Yangtze sturgeon gill rakers more (more than 36) and arranged closely, in the form of a thin slice, while the Chinese sturgeon gill rakers (28 or less) is sparse, in the form of a short, thick rod. The Yangtze sturgeon has multiple anastomotic plates, while the Chinese sturgeon has only one anastomotic plate. The juvenile skin of Yangtze sturgeon is rough, and the adult skin shows different degrees of smooth surface, while the juvenile skin of Chinese sturgeon is smooth and the adult skin is rough.
The Yangtze sturgeon body is gray-black or gray-brown above the dorsal and lateral plates, creamy-white between the lateral plate to the ventral plate, and yellowish-white or creamy-white abdomen, while the Chinese sturgeon is greenish-gray, grayish-brown, or grayish-yellow above the lateral plate, and below the lateral plate gradually transitions from light gray to yellowish-white, and the abdomen is creamy-white.
