Eating soup dumplings is a traditional Han Chinese custom, especially prevalent in Jiangnan. There is a folk saying that "a year older than you are after eating soup dumplings". Chen Zhiyou's poem "Soup dumplings" reads, "Every year, the winter solstice family cooks, a year of potential to add know nothing," and a Ningbo proverb reads, "Ningbo family pounded rice to make soup dumplings, know enough to be happy another day." Hu Bingyan also has a poem that says: "The fragrance of glutinous rice to make dumplings, boiling water floating silver rich and salty. It is sweet, smooth and refreshing, and the whole family is happy and drunk in the year of the Lord." "Ningbo soup dumplings are a must-have food, a kind of round dessert made of glutinous rice flour, and "round" means "reunion" and "success". "Round" means "reunion", "complete", festival time to eat dumplings, symbolizing family harmony, good luck, so to the dumplings, also known as "floating yuanzi".
