Any walnut variety can bear fruit without grafting, but the problem is that variety variation and differentiation will occur. Walnut is a monoecious plant with different flowers, which has the characteristic that male and female flowers do not meet. Therefore, walnut fruit is mostly the result of pollination by male and female flowers of two varieties, that is, "hybrid" offspring.
Matters needing attention of grafted walnut seedlings
Strictly control the grafting period. In late June in the north, the rootstocks were lignified, the buds were nearly mature, the rainy season had not yet come, and the grafting bleeding was less.
2. The scion is fresh, it is best to pick it at the same time, adjust the scion externally, and keep it moist during transportation to prevent the scion from losing water.
3. Take all the buds down and be careful when taking them, so as to ensure that all the buds have growing points.
4. The grafting speed should be fast to prevent tannin oxidation.
5. Pay attention to draining water when grafting. After grafting, pull a knife vertically under the joint to drain water and control the water content at the joint between the rootstock and the ear.
6. Tie it up. After grafting, carefully wrap the grafting site with plastic film, only exposing the petiole to prevent air leakage and oxidation blackening of the interface, which will affect the survival.
