Black Star Treasure SnailBlack Star Treasure Snail, also known as: Tiger Spotted Baby, Tiger Spotted Shell
Latin name: Cypraea tigris
English name: Tiger Cowrie
Black Star Treasure Snail is a genus of Treponema in the family Treponidae. mollusk. The shell is large and heavy, ovoid and bulbous. It is 9-10.6 centimeters long, about 6.8 centimeters wide, and about 5.3 centimeters high. The shell is firm and thick, extremely smooth, with porcelain light, white or light yellow in color, covered with black-brown spots of different sizes, shaped like the tiger's skin mottling, the edge of the mottling fuzzy floral pattern in two layers, the upper layer between light red and dark brown, the lower layer of light bluish-gray.
Shell margins are elongate and elevated in the upper half of the shell, with undeveloped lateral shell margins. The ventral surface is flattened, with a concave base in the middle, grayish-white. The mouth of the shell is long and narrow, slightly wider anteriorly, slightly curved, the outer lip is plump, the teeth on the margin are shorter and coarser, 24-30, the inner lip teeth are more slender, 22-26, the middle one is more densely arranged, while the lowermost four teeth are larger and shorter.
The Black Star Treasure Snail is found in the western Pacific region of India, the Philippine Islands, Australia's Yarborough and Western Australia to the north of New South Wales, China's Guangdong, Hainan and the Paracel Islands, inhabiting coral reefs in shallow water below the low tide line of warm water, and coral planulae seabed from the intertidal zone to a depth of less than 20 meters.
Slow-moving, afraid of bright light, hibernating in coral caves or under rocks during the day, and going out to feed at dawn or dusk, it is a carnivorous species, mainly feeding on algae or coral animals and so on. Dioecious, spawning season in March-July, the eggs are usually laid in coral caves, empty shells and dark places. The female shellfish does not leave the egg group after spawning, has the habit of guarding the eggs, still lying on top of the egg group to deliberately protect, until hatching.
The black star snail has suffered a sharp decline in resources due to environmental pollution, habitat destruction and overfishing. It is listed as a threatened species in the Red Names of Chinese Species, and is listed as a second-class protected animal in the List of China's National Key Wildlife Species.
Shellfish: Gastropoda, Baosui Superfamily, Baosui Family.
The shell is large and heavy, with a rounded expanded back and a flattened or slightly concave bottom. The shell margin is long and bulging in the upper part of the shell, and the outer lip teeth are short and wide; the inner lip teeth are thin and long, but the four lowermost teeth are large and short. The base color of the shell surface is white.
The floral pattern is in two layers: the lower layer is light blue-gray; the upper layer is between light red and dark brown. The two-layered composition makes the shell surface spots appear crowded and often blended together; the upper layer is often surrounded by yellow-orange dots. (All-black shells and giant species have been found.)
