The panda's digestion and utilization rate of bamboo is low, and the food stays in the body for a short time, so it takes a lot of eating and fast discharge to get enough energy to meet its needs. According to the different parts of the giant panda eating bamboo in different seasons, its daily intake is roughly 23 fingers and 40 kilograms of bamboo shoots, 10 to 18 kilograms of bamboo leaves and 17 kilograms of bamboo stalks.
Giant pandas are very clever animals, which is manifested in their excellent feeding strategies. They not only choose the local bamboo species with the best nutritional value, but also give priority to the parts with the highest nutritional value. The order of feeding is bamboo shoots, tender bamboos and bamboo poles.
Morphological characteristics of giant pandas
Giant pandas are chubby, like bears, with round heads and short tails. The length of the head and trunk is 1200 ~ 1800 mm, and the length of the tail is 100 ~ 120 mm. The weight is 80 ~ 120 kg, and the maximum weight can reach 180kg. Pandas are slightly heavier, and males are generally slightly larger than females. The head and body are black and white, but black is not pure black, and white is not pure white, but brown in black and yellow in white.
The Qinling area is large, with rough body hair and slightly brown belly hair. Minshan is relatively small, with thinner body hair and less brown belly hair, but Liangshan is not too small. The black-and-white appearance is conducive to hiding in dense forests and trees on the snow-covered ground, which is not easy to be found by natural enemies. Relatively sharp claws and powerful front and rear limbs are beneficial for giant pandas to climb tall trees quickly.
