Legend of Laba Festival

Laba Festival is the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, which originated in the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty. According to legend, Zhu Yuanzhang, who was not an emperor at that time, was in trouble and suffered a lot in prison. At that time, it was cold and hungry. Zhu Yuanzhang had no choice but to dig out some miscellaneous grains such as red beans, rice and red dates from the mouse hole in the prison.

Zhu Yuanzhang put these things in water and boiled them into a big bowl of "five-grain porridge", which happened to be the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. Zhu Yuanzhang called it "Laba porridge".

Later, Zhu Yuanzhang pacified the world and became emperor. In order to commemorate the hard and special days in prison, he designated that day as Laba Festival, and officially named the "five-grain porridge" he ate that day as Laba porridge.

Laba is also one of the grand festivals of Buddhism, also known as "Magic Weapon Festival", "Buddhist Enlightenment Festival" and "Enlightenment Meeting". After several generations of evolution, it has gradually become a well-known folk festival.
