Origin of the species
It is a natural hybridization and natural doubling of cabbage and kale to form a heterotetraploid. It belongs to Brassica napus along with two other subspecies (turnip kale and Siberian kale) and is utilized by humans in the form of edible oils or vegetables. The study of the origin and evolution of European oilseed rape has been a major challenge because no wild germplasm resources of European oilseed rape have yet been found in nature.
There was also gene infiltration between European oilseed rape and its ancestor species, Brassica napus, during its evolution into three subspecies, and different genes were subjected to selection during their diversification. Further gene expression analysis showed that these selected genes led to differential expression of downstream genes of different metabolic pathways.
After extensive analysis, about 7,000 years ago, European oilseed rape was synthesized by crossbreeding European turnips from Mediterranean cabbage varieties with the ****same "ancestor" (which has since disappeared) of four types of kale, including Brassica napus, Cauliflower, Broccoli, and Chinese Kale.
