How to distinguish male and female Chinese tortoises?

The way to distinguish male and female tortoises is to look at the plastron, tail and genitals.

1. Check the plastron

To identify the gender of a tortoise, you can check the plastron area. The plastron of female tortoises is flat, with dense patterns and narrow carapace plates, while the plastron of male tortoises is concave inward and the patterns are sparse.

2. Check the tail

In addition to looking at the plastron of the tortoise, you can also check the tail of the tortoise to judge. The male tortoise's tail is thicker and shorter and farther from the anus, while the female tortoise's tail is slender and closer to the anus.

3. Look at the genitals

During the estrus period, the male turtle’s genitals will be exposed on their own, shaped like a black fungus. You can also hold the turtle's limbs with your hands, and the male turtle's genitals will usually stick out.

Feeding. If it is a healthy adult individual, it should be allowed to hibernate naturally; if it is an unhealthy turtle or hatchling, it should be kept warm and the water temperature should be controlled above 20°C.

3. Feed

In addition to animal feeds such as fish, shrimp, snails, lean pork, mealworms, etc., you can also feed some rice, vegetable leaves, fruits, etc. appropriately. Feed once every 2-3 days, and the feeding amount should be eaten within 30 minutes. When the temperature is moderate in spring and autumn, the feeding amount can be appropriately increased. When the temperature is high in late autumn or summer, the feeding frequency and amount are gradually reduced. Stop feeding after hibernation.
