There is a small village called Demoli in Fangzheng County on the outskirts of Harbin. Demoli fish stew is a specialty dish of the village.
The word "Demoli" is the transliteration of the Manchu "dukou". The origin of this dish is Demoli Village, Yihantong Township, Fangzheng County, a suburb of Harbin (Yihantong, a Manchu "old village") (transliteration of "Niu Dao"), has a history of more than 100 years. Since this village is adjacent to the Songhua River to the north, the villagers here mainly rely on fishing to make a living when there are many fish. In the early 1980s, an old couple in the village opened a small restaurant on the roadside to entertain passers-by who stopped for a meal. They stewed local live carp (catfish, crucian carp, and gaya fish can also be used) with tofu and wide vermicelli. It was delicious. Later, the dish spread like wildfire.
