Heads, 10-30 cm in diameter, solitary at stem apex or branch tips. Involucral bracts multilayered, leafy, imbricate, arranged, hirsute, flowering in summer, inflorescence margins bearing neutral yellow ligulate flowers, not fruiting. Middle of inflorescence a bisexual tubular flower, brown or purple, capable of bearing fruit. Rectangular-ovate achenes with lignified, gray or black pericarp, called sunflower seeds.
