The spawning ground is located in the upper reaches of Jinsha River and Yangtze River, with a narrow channel with stacked rocks at its upper end and a dam formed by stones or pebbles at its lower end. Eggs are laid on stony riverbeds, and fertilized eggs adhere to stones to develop. When the water temperature is17 ~19℃, the larvae will hatch in about 6 days, and either fall into the cracks in the rocks or flow downstream to the slow-flow area. Development and growth of benthic invertebrates by feeding on plankton.
The young sturgeon descended to the middle reaches of the river from March to April of the following year, and lived in the brackish water area of the Yangtze River estuary from May to August. At this time, they mainly ate crustaceans and small bottom fish. After breeding, the parent sturgeons still return to the ocean, and some breed again in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River after many years. The Chinese sturgeon in the Pearl River system enters the river from the sea at the beginning of each year, and breeds in the area from the lower reaches of Liujiang to the mouth of Shilong Sanjiangkou in Qianjiang from March to April of that year.
