Different cherry tree species have different characteristics. There are several obvious differences that even beginners can easily recognize:
Petals number
Most wild species, as well as many cultivated species, have only five petals. However, some tree species have more than five petals, even more than 10 and 20 petals. Tree species with more than 5 petals are called Bachongsakura.
5 petals (this picture shows Oshima Sakura)
About 20 petals (the picture shows a cherry leaf)
About 100 petals (the picture shows chrysanthemum cherry).
Most kinds of cherry blossoms have light pink or white flowers, but some cherry blossoms are dark pink or light yellow. Some cherry blossoms will still change color after they are in full bloom, such as changing from white to pink.

Pink flowers (the picture shows Guan)
The yellow flower (Yujin in the picture) has sprouted.
Trees that bloom earlier usually germinate after the flowers bloom, making cherry trees look as attractive as cherry blossoms when they bloom. New buds of late-flowering trees usually appear before the flowers bloom, which makes cherry trees look different. In addition, the color of new shoots will also vary with different tree species. Most new shoots are green, copper brown or something in between.
Flowering time
Most cherry blossoms bloom in spring. But a few species only bloom in late autumn and winter. For example, Bachongsakura is a cherry variety with more than five petals, which usually blooms last, two to four weeks later than most cherry varieties with five petals. For details, please refer to when cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
The posture of the tree
Different growth habits of cherry trees also form different postures: triangular, cylindrical, V-shaped, drooping, flat-topped and so on. The weeping cherry tree is also called weeping cherry tree.
