The roe deer is a kind of small and medium-sized deer, body length of 0.95-1.35 meters, shoulder height of 0.67-0.78 meters, tail length of only 2-3 centimeters, weighing 15-30 kilograms; the winter hair is a uniform grayish white to light brown. The summer fur is reddish ochre, the ears are black, and the belly fur is white.

Legs teal, throat and belly white; rump with white patches; juvenile roe deer have 3 longitudinal rows of white spots, which disappear when weight reaches about 11 kg. The muzzle is brown, the end of the snout is black, the cheeks are yellowish brown, the base of the ear is yellowish brown, the back of the ear is grayish brown, the inside of the ear is yellowish and nearly white, and the tip of the ear is black.

Frontal, neck and dorsum of body are dark brown and slightly tan, mandibles yellowish, throat grayish brown, abdomen yellowish. The summer fur is short and thin. The dorsal side from the muzzle to the tail as well as the limbs is pure yellowish brown, darker near the dorsal midline, and the ventral side from the thorax and groin to the inside of the limbs is pale yellow.

Eland roe deer inhabits in the sparse forest zone, mostly in the river valley and the gentle slopes of the activities (altitude is generally not more than 2,400 meters), the roe deer timid nature. They are widely found in the northeastern provinces of China.

Like to eat the shoots, buds and leaves of shrubs and all kinds of grass, small berries, mushrooms, etc., generally by the female roe deer and their offspring constitute a family group, usually 3-5, morning and evening activities, to grass, mushrooms, berries for food, male roe deer midsummer to enter the group.
