Character Background
Previously, the same type of software Hatsune Miku, Mirror Sound Bell, and Mirror Sound Company exploded in popularity, generating a record number of sales of music softwares and an atmosphere of creativity that is rarely seen in music softwares. However, these softwares rarely featured male voices, and since Vocaloid 2 didn't actually feature male voices at the time (Mirror Sound Company featured a female voice actress, Asami Shimoda), INTERNET seized the opportunity and around November 2007 began planning for the production of the Vocaloid 2 softwares. The concept was different from that of the Hatsune Miku and other character vocalist series, in that it was not aimed at virtual idols, as that idea had already been adopted by other companies, but rather at reproducing the voices of real singers.
The project was then discussed with various singers, but as with Hatsune Miku, the singers refused because they were worried about how their voices would be reproduced, but when INTERNET approached Gackt via DWANGO, Gackt was very interested in the project and quickly agreed to do it. Two recording sessions began in December of the same year, but Gackt found the results unnatural and needed to tweak them.
The project was initially released by DWANGO's NIWANGO on April 1, 2008, but there was no response from INTERNET at the time, nor was there any publication, leading many to believe that it was an April Fool's Day joke [Ed: That's it, Gakupo!
