Gallstone disease includes stones that occur in the bile ducts and gallbladder. While asymptomatic stones can be observed and followed up first, gallstones are still primarily treated surgically in symptomatic patients.

Cholecystectomy is preferred for gallbladder stones with symptoms and/or complications, and laparoscopy has become the "gold standard" for gallbladder stones. Extrahepatic bile duct stones require surgical treatment, especially when accompanied by biliary obstruction, biliary tract infections with lesions, etc., and require choledochotomy.

Surgery is generally not required for asymptomatic stones, but surgery should also be considered for the following asymptomatic gallbladder stones:

1, gallbladder stones with a large number and small size, which are prone to fall into the common bile duct;

2, gallbladder stones with a diameter ≥2-3 centimeters;

3, gallbladder filled with stones or gallbladder atrophy;

4, gallbladder neck stones Embedded;

5, gallbladder calcification or "vase-like" gallbladder;

6, and polypoid lesions of the gallbladder;

7, greater than 3mm with cholecystitis gallbladder wall thickening.
