Introduction to Two Songs of Sending Xin Jian from Hibiscus Tower
Two Songs of Sending Xin Jian from Hibiscus Tower is a group of poems written by Wang Changling, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, when he was relegated to the post of county minister of Jiangning (present-day Nanjing, Jiangsu Province). The first poem is about the author's farewell to Xin Jian at the riverside on the morning of the second day; the second poem is about the author's farewell to Xin Jian at the Hibiscus Tower on the evening of the first day. The whole poem is a scene, with feelings in the scene, implicit and implied, with infinite flavor.
This group of poems was written around 742, the first year of Tianbao (742), when Wang Changling was serving as the prime minister of Jiangning (present-day Nanjing). In 727, Wang Changling received his bachelor's degree; in 739, he was banished to Lingnan; he returned to the north in the following year, and since the end of that year he has been the prime minister of Jiangning, still a banished eunuch. Xin Jian was a friend of Wang Changling's, and this time he intended to cross the river from Runzhou (present-day Zhenjiang), take the route to Yangzhou, and go north to Luoyang. Wang Changling probably accompanied him from Jiangning to Runzhou and then parted here. These two poems were written at this time.
