The differences between the two include different varieties, different appearances, and different tastes.

1. Different varieties: sand shrimp is a common shrimp in the coastal areas of Guangdong and belongs to the family Penaeidae; while base shrimp is not actually a species of shrimp, but a breeding method, in which wild shrimps are raised in captivity by building bases. Small shrimp larvae, the shrimps cultured in this way are called Jiwei shrimps.

2. Different appearances: sand shrimps are larger and darker in color than base shrimps; base shrimps have patterns on their shells and are lighter in color.

3. Different tastes: the meat of sand shrimp is more delicious and tender; the meat of Jiwei shrimp is relatively firm and chewy.
