Rays: a collective name for a variety of flat-bodied cartilaginous fishes found in most water regions of the world, from the tropics to near-Arctic waters, and from shallow to deeper than 2,700 meters. Devilfish refers to fish in the order skate. The muzzle is triangular , prominent or bluntly rounded, and edged without muzzle teeth. Pectoral fins enlarged anteriorly to form a medium-large or broad body disk, nostrils distant from the mouth in a primitive form. Dorsal fins 2, without hard spines; caudal peduncle thick, caudal fin well developed. The skate has a fan-like circle of pectoral fins around its body, and a degenerated caudal fin that resembles a long, thin whip, moving forward by the wave-like motion of the pectoral fins. Rays usually hide in the sand and attack suddenly when approached by shellfish, crabs and shrimp. Their teeth are like stone mortars, capable of grinding anything, and they have a long, highly poisonous red spine on their backs, which kills a person who is stung.

Habits: rays and stingrays are very similar because they both have flat bodies. Juvenile rays feed on animals that live on the sea floor such as crabs and lobsters. When they grow up, they mainly hunt mollusks such as squid. When hunting, rays rely mainly on their sense of smell. While lying on the bottom of the ocean, rays use a special closed-mouth breathing technique to try to avoid inhaling sediment. When the skate breathes, water is drawn in through a tube in the top of the head and finally out through the gill slits on the ventral surface.
