The custom of eating black rice at the beginning of summer originated from Sun Bin’s fight with Pang Juan during the Warring States Period. The two studied under Guiguzi together, but because Pang Juan was jealous of Sun Bin’s talent, he harmed him and finally locked Sun Bin in a pig pen. All kinds of torture. In order to survive from Pang Juan, Sun Bin pretended to be crazy, soaked black leaves in rice, cooked it, and kneaded it into dumplings that looked like pig dung, thus deceiving Pang Juan. Eating black rice can dispel wind, detoxify and prevent mosquito bites. People believe that if you eat black rice in the Beginning of Summer, Sun Bin will protect people.
Black rice is a folk food that existed in the Tang Dynasty. In the rural areas of Yixing, Liyang, Jintan and Wannan in Jiangsu Province, on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, most people use black rice leaves to cook black rice, which has become a custom. However, in some areas, it is eaten during the Qingming Festival, and in other areas, it is eaten on the Beginning of Summer.
