On January 20, 1979, Choo Ja Hyun was born in an ordinary family in Daegu, South Korea. Because her sister accidentally drowned when she was a child, and her mother suffered from schizophrenia, Choo Ja-hyun has always lived a cautious life in her childhood.

In 1995, she was discovered by a talent scout and filmed her first commercial. In 1996, when she was 18 years old, her parents divorced and she had to move out and live on her own.
