The pinyin is [pīn yīn].

Article 18 of the Law of the People's Republic of China on National Common Language and Writing Systems states, "The Hanyu Pinyin Program is a uniform specification for the spelling of Chinese personal names, geographical names, and Chinese documents in the Roman alphabet, and is used in areas where the Chinese characters are inconvenient or inaccessible." The symbols written according to this set of norms are called hanyu pinyin.

Hanyu Pinyin is also universally recognized internationally as the modern standard for Latin transcription of Chinese. The international standard ISO 7098 (Chinese Roman Alphabet Spelling) reads, "The Hanyu Pinyin scheme, officially adopted by the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China*** and of the State of China (February 11, 1958), is used to spell the Chinese language. The author records the pronunciation of the Chinese characters according to their Mandarin reading."

The Hanyu Pinyin movement in China began with the Cheyenne Character Movement in the late Qing Dynasty.

After the Opium War, China was reduced to a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, and the passion to save the nation and revitalize China inspired some patriotic intellectuals to put forward the idea of education to save the country. Liang Qichao, Shen Xue, Lu Duanzhang, and Wang Zhaoshi all unanimously pointed out that the complexity of Chinese characters was the reason why education could not be popularized, and therefore, a "Hanyu Pinyin Movement" was launched. In August 1923, the Ministry of Education convened a preparatory meeting for the unification of the national language and resolved to organize a committee to study the pinyinization of the national language.
