The roots of Elecampane contain 1% to 3% volatile oil and about 4% inulin. The main component of the oil is alantolactone (helenin). In addition, it also contains iso-alantolactone, dihydro-alantolactone, dihyclroiso-alantolactone, alan-toic acid, Inulin (alantol, found in fresh roots) and the triterpene component dammara-dienyl acetate, which is hydrolyzed to produce dammaradienol; also contains stigmasterol, Friedelin, γ- and β-sitosterol glucoside, nonocane, lupeol, etc. There is alantopicrin in the leaves.
