Annual or biennial herb, all bald and clean. Basal leaves firm and bright, obovate or broadly obovate, 30-60 cm long, entire or with inconspicuous obtuse teeth, base tapering into a broad stalk; stem leaves base drooping auriculate, clasping. Flowers yellowish, ca. 9 mm, clustered at the tips of racemes and crowning unopened flower buds; sepals 4, separated; petals 4, arranged in a cross; stamens usually 6, 4 strong; ovary superior, stigma capitate. Carob slender, 3-7 cm long, 3-4 mm thick, tapering apically into a beak 8-12 mm long. Flowering in spring.
