According to the Law of People's Republic of China (PRC) on the Protection of Wild Animals and its detailed rules for implementation, Blackwater Chicken is listed as a national second-class protected wild animal, and no unit or individual may illegally hunt, kill, sell, transport or utilize Blackwater Chicken and its products.

Black Water Chicken, also known as Red-billed Black Water Chicken and Darkmouth Water Chicken, is a bird with a body length of about 30 cm, which is distributed in swamps, lakes, rivers, paddy fields and other wetlands in Northeast China, North China, Central China and South China. Due to the influence of human activities on its living environment, the number of black water chickens has gradually decreased and become one of the national key protected wild animals.
