False applesauce and applesauce look alike, but it is not difficult to distinguish:
The leaves of applesauce are broad rectangular to rectangular-elliptic, much broader than those of false applesauce, 8-25 centimeters in length and 5-15 centimeters in width. The leaves of the false appletree are elliptic-rectangular, sublanceolate, 7-15 centimeters long and 2.5-7 centimeters wide.
The fruit of the appleblossom generally has 1 to 3 seeds per pod, between the size of a fava bean and a pigeon's egg, and much larger than the seeds of the false appleblossom. Fake applesauce fruits typically have 5 to 7 seeds per pod and are as large as peanuts.
Also, the appleblossom branches are more densely packed with leaves than the false appleblossom, and are virtually impervious to sunlight.
