Since the Tang Dynasty, ancient mooncakes have been eaten as sacrifices during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
It is said that the custom of eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival began in the Tang Dynasty.
"Luozhong Insights" once recorded: During the Mid-Autumn Festival in Qujiang, Xizong of the Tang Dynasty ordered people to send moon cakes to reward Jinshi.
It was popular in the court during the Northern Song Dynasty, and later spread to the people. At that time, it was commonly known as "small cakes" and "moon balls".
By the Ming Dynasty, it had become a common dietary custom shared by all the people.
