In my opinion, the so-called food desert refers to a place in the region that lacks specialty food or has an underdeveloped food culture. In my mind, no city is a complete food desert, but some cities have relatively low food culture and levels.
First of all, I want to talk about some small towns or remote areas. These places have relatively small economies and populations, so the catering industry is relatively underdeveloped. In these places, you may only be able to eat relatively simple home-cooked dishes or pasta, and there are no special delicacies. However, even in these places, there are some very delicious snacks or local specialties, such as Liangpi, Roujiamo, etc. Although they are not as colorful as in big cities, they still have their own taste and characteristics.
Secondly, some emerging cities or cities that are not mature enough may lack specialty food because the catering industry has not yet been fully developed. These cities may provide more Western-style fast food or simple snacks, but lack more advanced and distinctive dining venues and food culture. However, these cities also have the opportunity to gradually develop in the future and discover their own unique food culture.
Finally, even some big cities may have food deserts. This is mainly because some areas may be too commercialized, and the catering industry has become dominated by large chain restaurants, while specialties have been diluted or even disappeared. In addition, some regions may also lack attention to ingredients and cooking skills, resulting in a relatively low level of food culture.
In general, every city has its own food culture and characteristics, but some places may not be mature enough or pay enough attention to food culture, leading to the phenomenon of food deserts. However, even in seemingly deserted places, it is possible to find very delicious snacks and local specialties that just need to be discovered and tasted.
