Designers are confused at every stage, and 5-year designers are no exception. A designer asked me: "I can't design for five years, I can't imitate it", so I wrote an article to solve the problem for more designers with the same problem.
I have also experienced your stage, and found that I can't do design, and I doubt that I am not suitable for design.
At this time, I need to give myself a psychological hint and keep saying to myself, "I can design well because I have done too little."
Psychological hints are amazing. When you say I can't do it every time, you really can't do it, and you really can't do it well. Many times we scare ourselves away, not the thing itself.
We should hint in a positive way and a positive way. For example, I told myself that I could design well, but I only had less actual combat time and more actual combat time. With such a hint, you won't feel anxious because you can't design.
Share some of my feelings about design research.
Is it true that a lot of imitation is needed at the beginning of design?
You only listened to the first half of the sentence, and the second half was to imitate the excellent landing project.
In other words, designers should choose "excellent design and landing projects" when imitating works.
Why imitate excellent works? The highest level of work you can make is the level of the best work you have ever seen.
What you imitate is the level of a certain online work, so your aesthetics will stay at this stage. If you imitate the works of the Great God, then your aesthetics will be the height of the Great God.
When designing, you should be more capable than others, "the vision should be higher than the design ability", and the aesthetics and vision must be higher than the design ability, no matter what stage.
Why is it a landing project? This problem has been ignored by many designers. Whether looking at works or imitating works, it is best to find works of landing projects.
Because many works are beautiful and artistic, but they are not landing projects, the design needs to go through Party A and be tested by the market. If you often imitate such works, your style and aesthetics will tend to such works, your design will deviate from the market, and your works will have no commercial value.
Let me talk about the reason why I can't design after five years of design. This problem is very common, and you are not alone.
After five years of design, I still can't design. I summed up five reasons:
The first reason: learning is too complicated, and you spend your experience and time learning new skills. You know a little about every skill, but you are not good at it, so you are an all-round newcomer, and it is normal that you can't do design.
The second reason: I have no awareness of learning and promotion for five years, and I am very satisfied with the status quo when my salary is relatively acceptable. It took me several years to realize that when I wanted to change my job, there was nothing I could do.
The third reason: I have no perseverance, I can't keep studying, I make up my mind to study every time, but I give up after a few days. This is repeated, just like many designers want to read a book, but they haven't finished reading a book for five years, saying that they have completely learned to draw a picture in five years.
Without perseverance, you can't learn to design well. Learning design must be the same as learning for a period of time. We must persist in learning it well and change to something else.
The fourth reason: learn from what you see. I'm too eager to learn. I only learn but don't practice. I've learned a lot and I can't design.
The fifth reason: I don't know what I want without a clear positioning. I have been looking for what I want for five years, but I can't find what I like.
How can I find something I like? This question is actually hard to say. I say a word: I will like it only after I am good at it.
Many designers think they like it at first, but they don't like it when they do it, so you will fall in love with it when you do something well first. The initial love may be on a whim.
It's like when you are studying, you have a preference for this subject, some people like it very much, some people hate it very much, but do you really dislike it? You don't like it because you are not good at it.
The above five reasons are some common reasons that I have summarized. Let's see what our problems are. We must know what our problems are before we can change them.
This article was written by me before. For those who can't find the direction, you can take a look. To be an excellent designer, you must know 4600 words of knowledge (from thinking to cognition).
After working for five years, I think you have tried all kinds of designs yourself and know what you are good at. What do you like?
What you have to do now is to give up some unnecessary skills, which will not be used for a year or so. It is still very practical to give up on skill selection.
Learning too much is not a good thing, but an obstacle to you. At this time, it is necessary to get rid of its dross and keep its essence. It is very unwise to spend a month learning a skill that is only used once a year.
For example, when many designers learn PS, they will learn all the functions and commands. Is it necessary?
There is no need to do more than ten common functions in the design, and different types of designs have different common functions. For example, LOGO designers often use tools such as adjusting nodes, adjusting colors and shapes, while retouchers often use tools such as color matching, color gradation and curves.
You see, PS is the same, and the tools commonly used by different designers are different. You really don't need to learn all the commands. In fact, if you use more commands that you haven't learned, you will.
There must be a choice between learning a software command, learning skills, swiping a mobile phone and chatting, and time is wasted by these dispensable things.
Have you thought about a question in five years? How much time do you spend studying? Is it a year?
At present, you need to give up some skills, choose a major skill, study deeply and study deeply, such as logo design. On the surface, you just drew a figure, which is a superficial skill that many designers learn.
A little deeper, you will find that LOGO is a brand, a symbol bearing the enterprise/brand, and a visual system. The standard of a logo is not beauty or ugliness, but whether it can be remembered, whether it can be applied, whether the logo is in line with the market and so on.
If you stay on the surface every time you learn a skill, you can't design it well, nor can you design it well.
What you learn should focus on your main skills, such as logo design, font design, VI design, cartoon IP design, all for better logo design. If you study e-commerce design at this time, you will go astray and return to the initial state of inattention, confusion and blindness. In the next five years, you will still ask, why can't I design?
The best way for designers to break through in five years is to "focus" and become a great god in a field, not an all-around rookie, but a great god who specializes in it.
A very simple truth, even if you just design good food posters, you are also a great god in the field of food poster design. What can you do? You're still a rookie.
Speaking of omnipotence and specialization, I'll say a little more.
Many designers have this confusion. If I have a skill and get a job, no one wants it. So I can only learn many skills.
This question is inherently contradictory. Successful people insist on doing one thing, but the market needs generalists. Most people will eventually choose to cater to the market and live.
At this time, you need to separate your work from your development direction. What do you mean?
This job requires a generalist. I don't mean to know everything from the beginning, but I will learn more and more slowly in the process of work. If you read the recruitment information, you must learn the skills required by the recruitment information, then you lose.
Skills can never be learned, new technologies are constantly developing and new tools are produced every year. When can you meet the recruitment requirements of the company?
The longer you work, the more skills you will master and become a generalist.
Why should the development direction be separated from work? Work requires a lot of skills, but not after work. Use your spare time to develop your main skills. When your main skills have achieved something, you have the right to choose.
You can choose a company that only needs to do a single design. There are many such companies. Designers of every good company only need to design their own professional fields, and you can develop better in the professional fields.
Can't meet the needs of the company, but should consider self-development. If you can't jump out of this circle, you can only be an all-around rookie.
Whether you spend your spare time or go to work, I want to tell you that you can be a generalist, but you need to spend more time learning the main skills. The main skills should be the same as eating every day, and the auxiliary skills can be dispensed with.
In a word, break through at one point first and let yourself shine at one point first. This light will shine on other aspects of you, and other aspects will become excellent. Why are excellent people getting better and better? Good people only succeed in one thing at first.
The way for designers to get out of confusion in five years is to "focus" and find a breakthrough point.
