Get to know Shanghai from a quick tour - Suggestions for backpackers’ travel itineraries

I saw a post saying that I wanted to travel to Shanghai. I mainly wanted to understand the existence and characteristics of Shanghai, so I replied to a long list of places. Now I will describe in detail the reasons for choosing these places as a reference for backpackers traveling to Shanghai.

1. Must-visit attractions: The Bund, Lujiazui; Old Town God’s Temple; People’s Square; Huaihai Road or Xujiahui Business District

1. The Bund and Lujiazui: It is no exaggeration to say that I did not go there If you have been to the Bund, you have never been to Shanghai. Dozens of buildings along the Yangtze River, built at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the last century, bear witness to the century-old history of Shanghai's opening as a port. They have stood for nearly a hundred years and remain the same, and even from an artistic point of view, their value is immeasurable. Perhaps the legendary large pillars and exquisite murals and sculptures will not be seen by ordinary tourists, but the long row of buildings is actually integrated, and overlooking the magnificent scenery by the river may be enough. Opposite the Bund is Lujiazui, where almost all the buildings are the product of Pudong’s development and opening up. Now they have become symbols of the new Shanghai. Climbing the Oriental Pearl Tower seems unnecessary. Jin Mao Tower deserves a closer look.

Perhaps Lujiazui is the most high-end commercial center in Shanghai. There are a large number of foreign-funded enterprises and Chinese and foreign financial institutions. It is a well-planned emerging commercial center. If you have money and time, you can also go to the newly built aquarium, but I personally don’t think it’s worth recommending. The best way to get from the Bund to Lujiazui is to take a ferry, which is cheap and allows you to enjoy the scenery on both sides of the strait for a long time. The pier is located on Jinling Road at the southern end of the Bund. The downside is that you may have to walk a bit to get to Pudong. The price of the sightseeing tunnel is too high, but you can reach the foot of the Oriental Pearl Tower. There are also the Science and Technology Museum and Century Park built in Pudong in recent years, but I don’t like these places very much.

2. Old City God’s Temple: Foreign tourist groups usually visit the Old City God’s Temple when they come to Shanghai. In fact, it is just a large commercial city where you can visit ancient buildings, with the most tourist souvenir shops and gold shops. Of course, the Old Town God's Temple does not exist in name only. After all, Yu Garden is a well-preserved ancient garden from the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the center of Shanghai. You can see the relics of Jade Linglong or the Petrochemical Gang at the entrance. The City God's Temple, which was once occupied by a shopping mall for a long time, has now restored its old layout and is dedicated to Huang Cheng. The Jiuqu Bridge in the Huxin Pavilion is the center of the old City God's Temple and still maintains its old appearance decades ago. To the south of the Old Town God's Temple is adjacent to Shanghai Old Street, which is a half-renovated and half-reconstructed antique commercial street. However, the basic businesses have remained as they were before the renovation, and you can see what the old city of Shanghai looked like.

To the north is the newly built Ancient City Park, from which you can walk directly to the newly opened section of the Bund. For Shanghainese, the main attraction of this place is the small commodity center outside the mall. The self-employed center gathers various small commodities and can be approved individually. In addition, specialty stores in shopping malls can also provide some products that are difficult to find in other shopping streets. 3. People’s Square: People’s Square has long been Shanghai’s political center and a venue for large-scale mass activities.

But the last large-scale mass gathering here seems to date back to June 13 years ago. It is also the geographical center of Shanghai, and the national highway mileage starts from the center of People's Square. A new round of renovation projects is underway. The result of the previous round of renovations was to turn People's Square into a citizen cultural and leisure center. The People's Avenue runs from east to west. The center of the avenue is the Shanghai Municipal Government Building to the north, and the Fountain Square and Museum to the south. On both sides of the Municipal Government Building are the Shanghai Grand Theater and the Planning Exhibition Hall. There is not much value in visiting inside. The museum is flanked by green spaces. Underground Hong Kong Street may be regarded as Shanghai's earlier fashionable commercial street. The Shanghai Museum is a place worth visiting carefully. It is mainly composed of Chinese bronzes, ancient ceramics and ancient calligraphy and paintings. It is particularly famous

Going north from People's Square, you can reach the Nanjing East Road Pedestrian Street and the Shanghai Art Museum (which once existed as the Shanghai Library for a long time). To the east, Fuzhou Road Cultural Street (the foreign language bookstore and ancient book bookstore are of great value to readers, but the largest bookstore is a bit messy), and not far to the south, there is a world-famous bookstore.

4. Huaihai Road Commercial Street: The younger generation in Shanghai may prefer to buy fashionable clothes on Huaihai Road. Even if you go shopping on weekends, Huaihai Road has already replaced Nanjing East Road. Now Huaihai Road can be said to be a fashionable street in Shanghai. Huaihai Road Commercial Street generally starts from Changshu Road, where there is Meimei Department Store, which is famous for selling high-priced fashions (the shopping mall on Nanjing West Road is comparable to it).

But most Shanghainese people visiting Huaihai Road usually go to Xiangyang Road. The clothing exhibition here is transplanted from the most famous Huating Road, attracting a large number of customers with its leading fashion and cheap prices. To the east, Parkson on Shaanxi Road and Printemps in Paris are the two major shopping malls. Going east, you can go to the earlier Huating Isetan, and going east, you can go to Pacific Department Store. They are all famous high-end shopping malls in Shanghai. The general destination is Tibet Road. A large number of important modern buildings and key cultural relics protection units in Shanghai are scattered along Huaihai Road. Famous ones include the site of the National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Sun Yat-sen's former residence, Jinjiang Hotel, Zhou Mansion, Lanxin Grand Theater, Xiangyang Road Orthodox Church, Mahler's former residence (former Shanghai Youth League Municipal Committee), etc. The newly heated Xintiandi is also close to Huaihai Road. In addition, Shaanxi Road, Shimen Road and Yandang Road, which intersect with Huaihai Road, are important fashion and leisure streets in Shanghai.

5. Xujiahui Business District: Xujiahui, like Huaihai Road, has become a fashion center for the younger generation. The current Xujiahui has gradually transformed with the completion of the Oriental Commercial Building. At that time, Oriental Commercial Building attracted a large number of citizens to visit by providing unique high-end consumer goods. Then, Pacific Department Store and Huijin Department Store were completed one after another, and the renovation of Liu Shi's Store gradually gained more and more popularity. Recently, the large shopping mall Ganghui Plaza was completed. The two multiplex theaters in Xujiahui, Kodak and Yongle, are the biggest box office winners in Shanghai, and they are also one of the few theaters in China with digital equipment. In addition, Bainaohui and Pacific Computer City are the main computer distribution centers for Shanghai residents. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is not far north from Xujiahui. There are two other places worth noting.

One is the Xujiahui Catholic Church, which is the residence of the Chinese Catholic bishop in Shanghai. Together with Sheshan Catholic Church, it has become a representative of Shanghai's outstanding modern religious architecture. Another place that may not be well-known is the tomb of Xu Guangqi, about two stops away from the business district. However, the tomb is not large, and only the inscriptions on both sides explain the special identity of the tomb owner. If you are tired of shopping, you can take a rest in the newly built Xujiahui Park. However, I do not accept the design of Xujiahui Park because this green space has almost completely erased two important witnesses of Shanghai’s historical development: the Great China Rubber Factory, a representative of China’s early national industry, and the China Rubber Factory. The originator of the record industry is Lao Baidai Company (China Record Industry Shanghai Company, I went there three years ago and saw that employees are still working in the old building built in the 1930s and 1940s). Now there is only a chimney and a lonely building. 2. Other suggested routes: along the Suzhou River; near Lu Xun Park, Duolun Road, and Sichuan North Road; Nanjing West Road business district; Hengshan Road and Fuxing West Road villa consulate area;

6. Suzhou River: Suzhou The river may be a place that is easily missed by tourists, but if you want to know about Shanghai, Suzhou River may provide a lot of useful information. Its destinations are the Waibaidu Bridge and Broadway Building, as well as the Pujiang Hotel, the Russian Consulate and the Post Office Building on the north bank of Hebei Province, all of which are important witnesses of China's modern history. Generally, when going to the Bund, it is recommended to take the Waibaidu Bridge to the north bank of Hebei. Further west, it gradually turns into low-rise civilian areas and numerous old warehouses, mixed with some cheap abandoned warehouses that many artists now rent. After crossing Tibet Road, there will be more new commercial buildings

When I was in middle school, I rode a bicycle to the Suzhou River west of Beixinjing, which was still the scenery of the Jiangnan water town. Residents wash clothes by the river and raise ducks in the river. Now, it's unknown. The improvement of Suzhou River has gradually turned the smelly river from black to yellow. The limited shoreline reconstruction mainly involves the construction of green belts along the river. The two sides of the Suzhou River east of Tibet Road have generally maintained their original appearance for decades. Its important attractions are at the intersection of its estuary and the Huangpu River, but the entire river does provide many scenery closely related to the lives of Shanghainese people. 7. Lu Xun Park and near Sichuan North Road: Lu Xun Park is close to the Hongkou Football Stadium, the home stadium of Shanghai Shenhua, which was recently completed. This is where Shanghai cultural celebrities lived in the 1930s and 1940s, and a large area of ??intact Shikumen has been preserved. Lu Xun's former residence is located in an ordinary Shikumen on Yinshan Road. It is a small independent unit.

However, compared with today’s Shanghainese, Lu Xun’s former residence is spacious and luxurious enough. The former residence is surrounded by the same Shikumen where residents *** live together, so there is no need to compare. Duolun Road has been renovated to look neat and clean, and there are also many former residences of modern intellectuals. I don't remember their names. You can refer to the roadside signs. Last time I went there with my girlfriend, I found many hand and footprints of educated people on a small road, which was quite interesting. Some of the newly opened bars on Duolun Road are also very unique, and they also have private collections for a fee. Those who are interested can take a look.

Lu Xun's tomb was moved to Lu Xun Park in 1961. There is a memorial hall not far from the entrance of the park. Lu Xun Park has now become a hotspot for Japanese and Korean tourists. On the day I went, there were two Korean groups, one for adults and one for children. The Japanese came naturally because of Lu Xun, and the Koreans came because a Korean (like Yin) bombed the Japanese generals there in the 1930s, and the Koreans received patriotic education. I forgot the specific allusion. In fact, there is now a stone tablet there indicating where the righteous act took place.

8. Nanjing West Road Business District: Nanjing West Road Business District is an emerging commercial center.

Generally, you can get to Jing'an Temple from the North-South Elevated Highway, but in fact you can refer to three major commercial buildings: Meilong Town Square, Plaza 66, and CITIC Plaza near Shaanxi North Road. These three buildings are also part of the many office buildings in the Nanjing West Road area. Small-scale and large-scale commercial areas were formed. Among them, Meilong Town Plaza is a shopping mall that white-collar workers in Shanghai prefer to visit. It was built earlier and the price is relatively high. The other two buildings are dominated by senior business people. I can only stare at the price of shirts in the thousands. There are two old hotels near the shopping mall worthy of foodies' attention: one is the Meilong Town Old Hotel, and the other is the Pearl River Hotel at the intersection of Shaanxi Road and Nanjing West Road. Both are relatively well-known hotels in Shanghai, but the prices are relatively low.

In Wujiang Road Leisure Street near Shimen Road, there are many private restaurants offering snacks of various flavors. In addition, there are two places on Nanjing West Road for tourists to visit. One is the Shanghai Exhibition Center, also known as the Sino-Soviet Friendship Building. It is the sister building of the Beijing Exhibition Center built in the early years of liberation. It is a palace-style building complex in the style of the former Soviet Union. It is also the place where the Two Sessions are currently held in Shanghai. Opposite is the Portman Hotel, where Clinton stayed when he visited Shanghai. It was once the tallest building in the city and a symbol of Shanghai. The other Jing'an Temple is not as big as the Longhua Temple in southern Shanghai, and its historical value is not as good as the Xinyang Temple in northwest Shanghai (a national key cultural protection unit), nor is it the two five-priced Jade Buddha in the Jade Buddha Temple. So I personally think it's of little value.

9. Hengshan Road, Fuxing West Road, Bungalows and Consulate Area: The Hengshan Road area is a relatively small area in Shanghai, basically maintaining the appearance it had at the beginning of liberation. Once, a netizen mentioned the old French plane trees on both sides of Hengshan Road. This is indeed one of the scenery in Shanghai. At present, the consulates of various countries in Shanghai are concentrated in Fuxing West Road, Hengshan Road and ALM.

Hengshan Road Leisure Street is mainly composed of mid-to-high-end bars and leisure hotels. It is also the favorite place for white-collar workers in Shanghai. You have to be mentally prepared to spend money there. Back at a restaurant, a pot of fries cost more than 30 yuan, and a cup of coffee cost more than 30 yuan. But I have never been to the bars and restaurants in Xintiandi. I guess the people beheading there are even more hateful. There are no particularly valuable attractions in the whole street, just feel the atmosphere. Shanghai Library is located at the west intersection of Gao'an Road and Fuxing Road. In addition, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is located on a quiet road there. Going further west, you can find the former residence of Soong Ching Ling on Huaihai Road and the Shanghai Cinema on Xinhua Road (premieres of domestic and foreign blockbusters in China are often held here), but they are already very close to Xujiahui.

3. Marginal routes: Longhua Temple area; Hongqiao Development Zone, Gubei Community; Shanghai universities; 10. Longhua area: I went to Longhua when I was in middle school. It still looked like an ancient town with very small streets. Just like the small commercial street in Zhujiajiao, Zhouzhuang. Recently, Longhua has undergone large-scale reconstruction, demolishing shantytowns and creating Longhua Tourism City, but it still has not become a tourist hotspot in Shanghai.

Moved to Longhua after working. For foreign tourists, the main attractions of Longhua are the Longhua Temple Tower and the Martyrs Cemetery. Sloan Temple is probably the largest Buddhist temple in Shanghai, and based on its architectural style, it was probably built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Dragon Pagoda is more famous than the temple. According to the engraved bricks at the bottom of the tower, it was built in the Song Dynasty (the specific period is still controversial, but there are obviously no records of construction or reconstruction in the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties). It may be the oldest building in Shanghai, well preserved, simple and beautiful. Dragon Palace still maintains the habit of holding temple fairs on the first and fifteenth day of every month, but it has become a big party for small shops. There is a two-week temple fair every spring, which mainly focuses on small commodities, plus some folk art performances. Longhua Martyrs Cemetery was built on the basis of Longhua Park. Its main attraction is the famous old site of Hu Xian Garrison Headquarters. After the transformation, the men's and women's prison areas and the place where martyrs died (the execution ground) were opened to the outside world. However, there was no description of the old buildings outside the prison area.

In addition, there are many cemeteries of early leaders of the Communist Party of China, revolutionary martyrs and famous patriots in the cemetery area, such as Luo Yinong, Hui, Li Bai, Zhou Taofen and the Five Martyrs of the Left Alliance. The cemetery is often visited by foreigners. I wonder what they came to see. Now Longhua is a typical suburban town in Shanghai, and it feels different from the urban area. 11. Hongqiao Development Zone and Gubei Community: Hongqiao Development Zone was once the place that attracted the most intensive foreign investment in China, and once became a symbol of Shanghai’s opening up to the outside world. However, with the development and opening up of Pudong, Hongqiao Development Zone gradually lost its status as Shanghai's most important business district and became a regional business center. Entering the city from Hongqiao Airport, you can see the entire development zone on the road.

The area is not large, but there are many tall buildings with different architectural styles. The Yan'an Road Elevated and the Inner Ring Road Elevated form its two edges. Hongqiao Development Zone has been looking for new positions, one of which is the exhibition industry. There are many large exhibition centers in Shanghai, which mainly serve industrial and commercial exhibitions and have formed a certain scale. Gubei Community, not far from it, is an earlier high-end community in Shanghai. Its main target is foreigners and returnees, and it has developed an atmosphere that is very different from Shanghai's local residential areas. Gubei District, a part of Hongqiao Development Zone, is an important record of Shanghai's development, although its status is not as good as before. There are other important attractions in this area, including the Shanghai Zoo, Soong Ching Ling Cemetery, Xijiao Hotel, and Hongqiao Hotel, a courtyard house where national leaders often stay. In addition, Shangba, one of the three major ballet companies in China, is also located in this area. 12. Universities in Shanghai: Because I like to visit universities around the world when I go out, let me introduce the geographical distribution of several universities in Shanghai

East China University of Political Science and Law: Northwest, adjacent to Zhongshan Park, across the Suzhou River, a distinctive old school Campus, you can find many historical relics of Shanghai’s modern higher education. Shanghai International Studies University: Northeast, close to Lu Xun Park, with a small campus and dormitories outside the campus. Tongji University: Northeast, on the main road of Siping Road. I've never been there. Fudan University: Northeast, near Wujiaochang. The Xianghui Hall, Mathematics Building, and Department of Economics on the west side of the campus are all old buildings from the 1920s and 1930s. They are quite distinctive and can be reached not far to the north.
