There is a dish in the Qing Palace. It smells so strong that the concubines are afraid to eat it, but Cixi eats it with relish. This dish is leek. Because it will remain in her mouth after eating leek, it doesn't smell good, so the concubines are afraid to eat it, and Cixi really likes it.
In ancient times, women hoped that they could enter the harem and get the king's favor, so that they could live a good life. But living in the harem was not only a matter of intrigue, but also a lot of taboos in diet. For example, leek was a food that they could not eat at ordinary times, because they had to wait for the king's arrival every night. If they ate it, the smell would be very strong, and after the king came, they would not stay here.
In ancient times, there was no food like chewing gum to freshen the breath, so these concubines wouldn't eat this food. But in the late Qing Dynasty, Empress Wanrong liked this food very much, because Puyi never slept with Wanrong at night, so she dared to eat it. There was another person who dared to eat it, the Empress Dowager Cixi. When Eight-Nation Alliance invaded China, they fled all the way and ran to the foot of Mount Li in Lintong. At that time, Li Lianying asked the cook to pick the leeks from the field and make them into steamed buns for Cixi.
I didn't expect Cixi to like it very much after eating, and thought it was delicious. So when she returned to the palace, she missed the taste of leeks very much. She also ordered officials in Lintong to pay tribute to leeks and named the dish fried with shredded potatoes with leeks as "green snake fried with white snake". Later, she named the name of leeks as golden leeks, which has now become a special food in Xi 'an.
