The founder of Confucianism, the sage Confucius, the sub-sage Mencius, the fusheng Yan Hui, and the historian Zuo Qiu Ming were all born here.

During the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal promoted the prosperity of Jining's commodity economy, making Jining an important industrial and commercial city along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
