Husband and wife beef slices is a famous dish in Chengdu, Sichuan, created by husband and wife Guo Chaohua and Zhang Tianzheng. Usually beef scalp, beef heart, beef tongue, tripe and beef are used as the main ingredients, braised and then sliced. Then add chili oil, pepper noodles and other auxiliary ingredients to make red oil and pour it on top. It is finely made, beautiful in color, tender in texture, fresh in taste, spicy and fragrant, and the most delicious.

It is said that in the late Qing Dynasty, there were many vendors carrying burdens and baskets on the streets of Chengdu selling cold beef slices. Made from cheap beef offal scraps, washed, stewed and sliced, served with soy sauce, red oil, chili, pepper noodles, sesame noodles, etc. It has a delicate flavor, low price and good quality, and is especially popular with rickshaw pullers, porters and poor people. Students' favorite food.

In the 1930s, Chengdu native Guo Chaohua and his wife made a business of manufacturing and selling cold beef slices. The couple personally operated the business, walking around the streets and hawking in baskets. Because it uses leftovers from beef shops as ingredients, it is cheap and tastes good, so it is very popular. People call this kind of cold beef offal "couple's waste slices". Because the word "waste slices" didn't sound good, and the ingredients contained beef lung slices, the word "waste" was homophonic to "lung" and was renamed "couple's lung slices". Later, they found that the taste of beef lung was not good, so they canceled the beef lung. In 1933, the Guo couple set up a store near Banbianqiao in Chengdu (to the right of the back gate of today's National Park). The store was officially named "Husband and Wife Fei Pian", and the plaque was gold with black background, inscribed by the calligrapher Zhao Yunyu. After several changes, the store moved to Admiral West Street in the downtown area, expanded its business scale, and added beef noodles and other varieties. Customers can not only taste beef lung slices, but also have noodles to satisfy their hunger.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, during the period of public-private cooperation, the Guo couple's beef lung shop, like other modern famous restaurants, was merged into a state-owned unit. After several generations of hard work, Husband and wife's beef slices have become a well-known delicacy in takeaway shops both at home and abroad.
