The body is elongated, slightly laterally compressed, with the dorsal and ventral fins opposite each other at the midpoint of the body. There is an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. The caudal fin is y forked. The muzzle is pointed and the mandible is slightly longer than the lower jaw. The body is clad in thin, elliptic scales. Adults have a light brown or olive green dorsal surface, a silvery band of metallic luster along the midline of the body, a silvery white belly, colorless fins, and gray-black spots on the edges of the dorsal scales.
