The yellow on the tail of shrimp is an unproductive shrimp. When the mother shrimp reaches maturity, the head and neck will contain the yellow, so the shrimp with the yellow must be the mother shrimp, but without the yellow, it is not necessarily the male shrimp. Generally, the mother shrimp is immature and can't see the yellow. Most people are familiar with crab roe, but they know little about shrimp roe. The mother shrimp contains shrimp roe in its head and neck before it conceives eggs, commonly known as red-headed larvae.
