Do stick insects only eat leaves?
Stick insects are mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, with more than 2,200 species in the world. They live in forests or bamboo forests and feed on leaves. They are pests in the forest, and some species can also harm crops.

A stick insect that lives in the tropical rainforests of Hainan Island, Honghe Prefecture of Yunnan Province and Xishuangbanna, has wings on the abdomen and back, much like broad leaves in the rainforests, with a convex leaf "midrib" in the middle and "branches" on both sides, and a round head "petiole". Its feet can be disguised as small leaves eaten by other insects. The body color is mostly green or brown, which is very similar to the color of plant leaves in the living environment. This double camouflage makes it difficult for them to find natural enemies.

Stick insects move slowly, squatting on branches during the day and coming out at night to feed on leaves. Its breeding method is also very special. The female lays an egg on the branch, and it takes a year or two for the larvae to hatch. Interestingly, some females can lay eggs without mating. This phenomenon is called parthenogenesis. Larvae often climb trees at night and grow into adults after molting several times, with a life span of only 3 ~ 6 months.
