The strawberry tree is a member of the genus Strawberry Tree, a genus of 14 species found throughout Europe and North America. Most of the Strawberry Tree genus are small, beautiful trees with glossy, narrow leaves and slightly reddish, flaking bark.
None produce particularly tasty fruit, especially if you consider that they are actually close relatives of blueberries, galangal and cranberries, but this species of Strawberry Tree is cropped as an ornamental tree in warmer climates around the world.
Small evergreen trees or large shrubs, 5 to 15 meters high, rounded crown, bark peeled off, the new bark is smooth, reddish brown. The trunk is often twisted and scarred, with alternate simple leaves, shiny leathery, narrowly ovate, 5~10 cm long, with toothed leaf margins and campanulate flowers.
0.5 cm long, white or pink, panicle, 5 cm long, flowering September to December, drupe, round, 15 cm diameter, orange-red, edible, the following fall into heat.
Slow growth, suitable for moist, well-drained soil and sunny or semi-shade environment, drought-resistant, saline, adapted to acidic or alkaline soils, cold limit -17 ℃. Adapted to Mediterranean climate, not adapted to dry, hot climate.
