Dendrobium is slightly cold in nature and sweet in taste. Its functions mainly belong to the stomach, lung and kidney meridians mentioned in traditional Chinese medicine, and it is especially suitable for diseases caused by heat, such as loss of body fluid, low fever, dry mouth and scanty tongue. It is also suitable for people with stomach yin deficiency, unpleasant diet, noisy epigastric cavity, retching and vomiting, and light tongue.

There are many kinds of Dendrobium, which must be used differently. Dendrobium huoshanense, Dendrobium nobile and Dendrobium nobile are commonly used. Dendrobium huoshanense, also known as Fengdou and Huodou, is stronger in nourishing yin and promoting fluid production than the latter two, and its processing method is more complicated and the price is more expensive. Jinshihua, also known as Jinchai Shijiu and Jindou, is similar in efficacy to Dendrobium huoshanense. Dendrobium officinale is also called dry Dendrobium officinale and fine Dendrobium officinale, and its efficacy is second. There is also fresh Dendrobium, which can be planted in pots and taken at any time. It has a good ability of clearing away heat, promoting fluid production and quenching thirst. There is also an interesting name called Dendrobium candidum.

Dendrobium huoshanense is most suitable for the elderly who are weak and have insufficient stomach yin, and the medication should not be too cold; Dendrobium nobile has good effects of nourishing stomach yin, tonifying kidney essence and clearing heat, and can quickly eliminate the fever symptoms of acute cholecystitis. Dendrobium officinale is weak in nourishing yin and promoting fluid production, and can be used for mild diseases; Fresh Dendrobium is mostly used for people suffering from warm diseases and harmful body fluids.
