Brown-green on the upper side of the body, silver-white on the lower side; mixed with round spots of white with light blue. Arranged in rows along the longitudinal axis of the body. Below the lateral line, the spots are large and arranged in 6 rows, above the lateral line, the spots are small and arranged in about 18 to 20 rows. The fin spines of the dorsal and anal fins are distinctly notched. The caudal fin is shallowly concave in juveniles and shallowly forked in adults. When frightened, the body color changes to a mixture of dark brown, grayish brown, and white. The dorsal fin has 13 hard spines and 10 soft bars; the anal fin has 7 hard spines and 9 soft bars. The body length can reach 40 centimeters. The fin spines have lateral grooves that secrete venom and paralyze when stung.

Distributed in the Indian Ocean, western Pacific Ocean waters, from Kenya to southern Mozambique, east to the western Pacific islands. Generally inhabits coral reef waters, water depth in 1-30 meters. It mainly feeds on small fish and crustaceans.
