Writing content

Xiaochi is a poem by Yang Wanli, a poet in the Song Dynasty. The first sentence of this poem says that the pond is connected with flowing water, the second sentence says that there is a shade on the pond, the third sentence says that Xiaohe comes out of the water and accompanies the pond, and the last sentence says that dragonflies are sentient and fly with Xiaohe.

The whole poem uses rich and novel imagination and personification techniques to describe the characteristics and changes of natural scenery around Xiaochi in detail, and shows the poet's love for nature.

Creation background

Xiaochi is contained in Volume 7 of Chengzhai Collection and Jianghu Collection, and the poems recorded in this collection are basically arranged according to the time of employment and the order of seasons. The eighth poem in Xiaochi is Bing Shen Sui Chao. Bingshen is the third year of Chunxi in Song Xiaozong (1176), and the lunar new year refers to the first day of the first lunar month. Therefore, the poem Xiaochi is regarded as after the Spring Festival of that year.

The first and second poems in Xiaochi are "Summer quatrains" and "Light rain in late spring", which shows that these two poems were written in late spring and early summer. The fifth poem title after Xiaochi is Fishing for Sesshū Tōyō in Extreme Summer, which indicates that the author still lived in Jishui fishing for Sesshū Tōyō's study on the extremely hot day of that year.

In Jishui, even in Jiangxi and Hunan, the first time the lotus blooms is in the early May of the lunar calendar. According to the words such as "small lotus in the shade" and sharp horns in Xiaochi, it can be inferred that the creation time of this poem should be in the early May of the third year of Chunxi (1176). Its creation place is in Jishui county, and the small pond in the title refers to the big pond directly in front of Yang Wanli's former residence.
