Is cowpea horn poisonous?
Cowpea pods, like other leguminous vegetables, contain Gleditsia sinensis and phytoagglutinin, which has a strong stimulating effect on gastrointestinal mucosa, destroying and hemolyzing cells, and even hemorrhagic inflammation in severe cases. These two toxic substances are not heat-resistant and can be destroyed after sufficient heating. If the heating is insufficient, it will cause poisoning. After poisoning, patients may have epigastric pain, fullness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, symptoms such as hematemesis and numbness of limbs may occur.
